The botanicals and flavonoids in Venocap have collagen-strengthening and astringent (contracts and tightens blood vessels and body tissue) actions that support venous strength. The herbs gotu kola, horse chestnut, witch hazel, and butcher's broom all have important astringent properties. The flavonoids diosmin and oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) help stabilize collagen, helping to keep the veins strong and supple. Centella asiatica (gotu kola) contains important constituents (particularly asiaticosides) that have been found to support the integrity of the sheath surrounding the vein and enhance upward blood flow. Aesculus hippocastanum (horse chestnut) has important constituents for supporting venous functioning. Studies have found that decreases in lower leg volume with extracts of horse chestnut are comparable to those achieved with support stockings. Hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel) has a long history of folk use for vein support due to its important astringent qualities, resulting in vasoconstriction. OPCs help to strengthen connective tissues and have a particular affinity for the supportive structures of blood vessels. The active ingredients, ruscogenins, in Ruscus aculeatus (butcher's broom) have been found to enhance venous integrity by their astringent properties. Diosmin, a flavonoid derived from hesperidin, supports venous tone by protecting the vessel wall. Diosmin also has demonstrated antioxidant activity. Venocap is an effective combination of flavonoids and botanicals shown to support venous tone.
