I am talking here about North American wild ginger: Eastern wild ginger , which is Asarum canadense, is not closely related to the ginger you get in the store, but is deeply aromatic and smells very much like store-bought ginger. The taste is slightly more subtle, and a little more peppery than regular ginger. Wild ginger has been used for eons by Native Americans, and quickly by settlers in extracts of wild ginger since 1600. Wild Ginger is easily transplanted or propagated by root division. Loosen soil and plant rhizomes about 1/2 inch below the soil and mulch. It is a ground-cover plant so it will expand at a moderate rate. Needs most humus soil and plenty of shade. A great woodland garden plant and medicinal herb often used in tea or poultice.
