Doctor’s Best Lutein Gummies contain a natural blend of Lutein and Zeaxanthin found in Marigold flower extract. The Zeaxanthin in the Lutein Gummies is standardized to contain a minimum of 25% of the Meso-Zeaxanthin isomer. Meso-zeaxanthin, Lutein, and 3-R, 3´R-Zeaxanthin are the primary carotenoids found in the macula lutea, a small yellow-colored area of the eye’s retina near the optic disk that provides central vision. These three colored carotenoids are found in an equal ratio and are referred to as the macular pigment. In humans, Lutein and Zeaxanthin are essential carotenoids and therefore must be obtained from the diet. Meso-Zeaxanthin is found in the center of the macula, where it accounts for about half of the macular pigment. Lutein is found in the peripheral area of the macula. The central part of the macula has the highest concentration of light-sensitive cone photoreceptor cells and is responsible for detailed central and color vision. Macular pigment optimizes visual performance because it absorbs blue light and prevents light scatter. Optimal visual performance in the eyes is literally dependent upon optimal macular pigment levels.
