Eyebright is a member of the figwort family that is original to Europe but now inhabits most of the globe. Its genus name is adapted from the Greek word for “gladness,” while its common name is a reference to its traditional use since the 14th century for various disorders of the eye. The astringent qualities of eyebright are used to address congestion, sinusitis and other issues relating to inflammation of the mucous membranes. In addition to poultices, lotions and eye washes, eyebright is added to syrups and throat lozenges. The herb is also listed as an official ingredient in the Homeopathic Pharmacopœia of the United States. Use to prepare poultices, washes and tinctures for the skin and mucous membranes.
