Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a mushroom that looks like the charred remains of burned wood on the side of a birch tree (sometimes growing on Elm and Alder, but Birch is its favorite tree). Chaga produces a woody growth, or conk, which looks similar to a clump of burnt charcoal — roughly 10–15 inches (25–38 centimeters) in size. However, the inside reveals a soft core with an orange color. It usually takes another 5-7 years for it to fully mature. Under favorable conditions, Сhaga can grow 10–20 years.
