Alkanet (Alkanna tinctoria) is also known as Batschia canescens, Hoary puccoon, Lithospermum canescens, Dyer’s bugloss. It is a plant in the borage family whose roots are used as a red dye. It is native in the Mediterranean region. Alkanna tinctoria has a bright blue flower. The plant has a dark red root of blackish appearance externally but blue-red inside, with a whitish core.
